For Jackrabbit Homestead, artist and environmentalist Kim Stringfellow with musicians Jim White and Claire Campbell delved deep into the story of Catherine Venn, who chronicled her 1950 homesteading experience for Desert Magazine. Join Desert X Artistic Director Neville Wakefield and the artists as they listen to the music they created for Stringfellow’s Desert X installation. Their conversation traces how Venn’s mid-20th-century homesteading story is embedded into the cabin and its sonicscape.
About the artists:
Claire Campbell is a founding member of the longtime folk-family-band, Hope For Agoldensummer. She has been recording & touring for over twenty years, working for herself, and also as a hired gun for musical luminaries like Patterson Hood and Jim White. In addition to live performance, Claire is also a composer for film, podcasts, and other media. Recently her songs and voice have appeared in Moments of Joy, Athens Rising, and The End. She was the principal composer for the serial podcasts: Happy Face, Disorganized Crime, and Racket. If you’ve ever heard a strange high pitched wail behind someone narrating a gruesome crime, it was probably Claire playing the singing saw.
When he’s not releasing his own critically acclaimed solo albums, Jim White splits time producing records for other artists, exhibiting his visual art in galleries and museums across the US and Europe and publishing award winning fiction. Numerous songs from White’s back catalog have appeared in film and television, including Breaking Bad and the feature film El Camino. Americana music fans may recognize White as the narrator and defacto tour guide for the cult-status BBC documentary, Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus, a road movie set in the rural South. White recently completed his first novel, Incidental Contact, a chapter of which was awarded the prestigious Pushcart Prize for short fiction.
